OH MY ACHING BODY! CAN ACUPUNCTURE WORK WITH PREGNANCY BACK PAIN?
For centuries the Asian population has been using acupuncture for decreasing pain including pregnancy back pain. Acupuncture is a technique of inserting tiny thread-like needles along specific electrically charged points on the body which creates chemical changes in the body to help reduce pain and heal the body at the cellular level.
One of the great reasons people in the West use acupuncture is that it is drug free and offers an alternative to invasive procedures. Many women who become pregnant are also using this pain relief modality for their pregnancy back pain. It is common knowledge that during pregnancy a woman should not take medications that can affect the fetus in a negative way. That is why acupuncture is a great method of treating pregnancy back pain.
A common complaint amongst pregnant women is pelvic and low back pain. A 2005 Swedish research study found that acupuncture and stretching exercises helps relief pain in the pelvic girdle for pregnant women. There is currently no cure for pregnancy back pain. The Swedish study included 286 pregnant women divided randomly into three groups. One group received standard treatment (a pelvic belt and home exercise program), one group received standard treatment plus acupuncture, and the third group received standard treatment plus stabilizing exercise to improve pelvic mobility and strength.
PREGNANCY BACK PAIN GREATLY REDUCED
Following treatment, both the acupuncture group and stabilizing exercise group recorded lower pregnancy back pain levels than the standard group during morning and evening reporting sessions. An independent examiner indicated that those in the acupuncture group reported the greatest reduction in pregnancy back pain.
